Happiness - How To Achieve It

Happiness; what is it?

According to Wikipedia “Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgements by a person about their overall well-being.”

Generally speaking we all want happiness in our lives; it is good for so many things like general well being, our friendships, our relationships, our health and just being able to deal with stress which everyone will have to deal with at some point. The happier you are in the first place the more ‘easier’ it will be for you deal with any setback that comes your way.

So the state of happiness has been defined and it is agreed we all need it, so how do we achieve it? As we are all individual and unique achieving happiness is obviously going to be different for different people. One person may derive simple happiness from doing a hobby like gardening whereas someone else may find this incredibly dull so obviously would not be happy by doing this activity. We are all different so it is up to you to find the different ways to make yourself feel happy.

Most times we are not just happy we have to actively ‘make’ ourselves happy.

There are some basic pointers which many of us can do to achieve a certain level of happiness.

  • Surround yourself with people who are happy themselves and who make you feel good in their company.

  • Accept that ultimately it is up to you to make your life the way you want it to be; you have the power. Nobody else can make your life happier for you.

  • Be aware of your thoughts and feelings and if you are feeling ‘down’ acknowledge the fact then try and find a way to reverse that feeling. The practice of mindfulness (being aware of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings at any given point) will certainly help.

  • Focus on positivity in the here and now and for the future. Releasing negativity and not holding onto grudges and bad feelings, from the past, will help to move your life forward.

  • Take part in some form of exercise on a regular basis and also get the necessary sleep you require. Sometimes just an extra hour can make all the difference to you.

  • Be thankful for your life and the bits of your life that are ‘working’ and are doing great. Most of the time there is someone, probably not so far from you, who is not doing as good as you.

  • Do the things you love to do, whether it may be dancing, taking breaks and holidays or learning about a particular subject that interests you.

  • Take stock and appreciate the little things that can give you pleasure such as taking a stroll on a lovely summers evening, eating an ice-cream or hearing a bit of music which brings back good old memories.

So it is up to you - take control of your own happiness!
